The testing areas included the following:. I then ran benchmarking tests on all Virtual Machines using two testing methods, not optimised and optimised. Point to note here: testing took around three days to complete. It was a time consuming process. Interestingly, I found that the B4ms offered better performance compared to some of the other Intel Virtual Machines.
This test surprised me a little bit. I found that there is little improvement to the benchmark score when optimising the Virtual Machine. I did find a small increase but only marginal. Using less threads does allow for more density however, during testing I did not find any significate performance improvement when optimising vs non optimised.
As you can see from the chart above, there is very little difference between an optimised Virtual Machine compared to a default Virtual Machine. One set of metrics that really interested me was the spreadsheet scores.
Use Log Analytics for the diagnostics feature
AMD showed better results on every spreadsheet test compared to the higher spec Intel Virtual Machine. Other results showed that AMD offered faster document load and save document speeds. This is shown in the screenshot below:. As show in the pie chart below, you can see that the AMD Virtual Machine blue loads the application for use much quicker than the Intel equivalent. The Das v4 VM sizes offer a combination of vCPUs, memory and temporary storage able to meet the requirements associated with most production workloads.
The Dsv3-series sizes offer a combination of vCPU smemory, and temporary storage well suited for most production workloads. This is a small snapshot of the tests completed. However as you can see from the results shown, the AMD Virtual Machines provide faster responses and have a much higher score from the benchmarking software than the Intel hardware equivalent. This morning, aroundwe started seeing performance issues with connection to the desktop. By performance issues I mean, slow mouse movements, slow to scroll through a website or email and the like.
I would blame this on an individual's home internet connection or coffee shop wifi, but, it is all of my users including myself. I wish there were some way to see or manage the performance of the WVD connection broker Is anyone else seeing this?
I did see the thread about drops and what not, but this is not related, I do not believe. We tried investigating our local network, our local internet connection, rebooting the local workstation, and rebooting the VMs in the cloud to no avail. Same exact issue.
Our WVD performance starting today has been horrendous. Our support teams have been getting notifications that users are having issues connecting to desktops, terrible latency, disconnections, etc. I think Microsoft may have released this product too early and are unable to handle the load from this mass on-boarding.
I guess it isn't very accurate. The service degradation seems to be around times people are starting to work. I changed my "quality settings" in the RemoteApp and that seemed to help for now. The issue is sporadic, works fine for a while then dips. At night it is great! Separately, latency on an existing connection to WVD seems much better at the moment. The person did not know what to check beyond asking me to restart the VMs. I asked them to forward the ticket onto the WVD Engineering team. This allows you to kill said service or identify if there are too many users on one Host. This a non exhaustive list of potential symptoms you may experience when CPU is under contention. The first is the OS disk of the virtual machine. It is quite common for IT admins to forget about the OS disk and concentrate on compute sizing. When sizing incorrectly, you will experience issues with overall useability. The smaller disk sizes have lower throughput and IOPs availble which is not great for multi session deployments.
Most deployments should using P15 or higher to ensure there is enough IOPS to serve all the user applications. Choosing the wrong sized virtual machine could result in limiting the potential throughput allowed by the disk.
One of the quickest ways of identifying a disk performance issue, is to review the disk queues within Resource Monitor. Using the wrong type of storage account for Azure files can cause performance issues with FSlogix profile disks. You would also need to factor in size and IOPs required for your user base.
Do users have large user profiles or do they mainly use web applications.
Make sure you are using premium storage or Azure Netapp files for large deployments. The indexed search not enabled can also create performance issues and a slow experience during logon. You can also use a Scale out file server if you want to go traditional Iaas. The challenge we all have is core business applications like Edge, Teams, and outlook modern Applications that can consume copious amounts of RAM.
High memory utilization is not the issue, the challenge comes when applications load their data into RAM. When the RAM is fully consumed, the page file kicks in which then starts to impact the performance of the Session Host.
When RAM is consumed, performance drops to SSD or standard disk speeds which will most likely cause performance degradation.
Reviewing hard faults is the quickest way to identify performance issues and usually its related to too many users on one host heavily using applications like Excel. Network contention is usually at the User side. However there are times when there could be a issue with the Connection broker, Gateway or communication from the host agent to the WVD Management Service.

Determine user connection latency in Windows Virtual Desktop
